He sits in the mouth of the barn where the cool dark breaks into the hard white of the open land, boots braced like they’ve earned the rest. Dust clings to the air, leather and sweat holding the hours of work already spent, while the world beyond the fence waits without kindness or promise. Nothing moves fast out here, and he’s learned not to either.
