I spent an entire day wandering Kyoto, hoping to find a geisha to photograph. As the sun sank, so did my expectations. Sitting on a bench in Gion, I reached for my phone when a taxi rolled past. In the back seat, a woman calmly applied her makeup. The image I’d been searching for all day. I froze in awe, then followed the cab until it hit a red light. When I caught up, she looked up as if she knew I was there. I pointed at my camera, she nodded, and I took the shot as the taxi turned the corner.
